They are common in the Bay as has been mentioned. I believe you. I've
caught them as a kid in the Bay and I saw one caught upwind of the
launch at Coyote about 2 yrs ago. I remember seeing a big one hung from
a gaf by a fisherman once too.
THere are some other large fish in the SF Bay like sturgeon and Stripped
Bass. I've caught a few 5' "wingspan" skates (sort of bat rays rather
than sting rays) fishing off the pier in Pacifica too about 20 yrs ago.
