Last year I bought one of those marine orange whistles at Helm. Those
things are just incredible in the amount of sound they generate. In fact,
I've never tried one at full force because the ears of anyone within a
dozen feet start to hurt at some point. I think they are the best way to
call another sailor for help in the water (in which case I would be willing
to accept some potential eardrum damage....). I now consider these whistles
as a indispensable safety item.
