Just a mention as I feel like being nice and helping new sailors.......

For big guys and such, a 9'4" is pretty much an every day board on the
bay and we need 10' or more for true tansition board effects. By
definition, a transition board is one you can uphaul and get back to
where you started so this often means a dagger board is included.

I remember learning on my Malibu with its 160l and my 230# and my buddy
who was all of 125# learning on his 120L HighTech Epoxy board. With
its BIG fin, he'd go upwind much easier than I could even with my dagger
board....

see the numbers:

230# on 160L board.....160L*2.2#/L-30#= 322lbs of flotation
Safety factor is flotation/Wt and wt is sailor wt plus rig plus wetsuit
~50#
so my safety factor was 322/(230+50)=1.15.....Jeepers! A first short
board should be 1.3 safety factor! A 10.5 New Malibu isn't much safety
for a big guy...

I actually have a 170L Malibu and bought a 9'9", 160L Velocity for my
first short board that I was able to learn to get into the straps with
(after a shop sold me an 8'8" ChallengeFlex for my FIRST short board
where the 160# salesguy said it would be a great board for me at Coyote
on a 5.0! Yeah, when it is blowing 25 or more....Ya should have seen me
trying to waterstart it on the inside in 8 knots of wind to get the the
16 knot windline! A more experienced sailor saw me and said "Try my
Velocity and you can give me $400 later if you want it".....Amazing what
the right gear can do.)

Now for Cord (my tiny friend)
125# on 120L board.....120L*2.2#/L-18#= 246 lbs of flotation
Cord's Safety Factor = 246/(125+50) = 1.4 Well above the recomended 1.3
