SBSA Coliform Study update through 8/29/97

Summary & Interpretation

Beginning July 1, SBSA began a modified study during which we have operated
the disinfection process a bit more conservatively, targeting not to exceed
500 MPN/100mL in the plant effluent. In fact, most of the fecal coliform
measurements have been below 5.

Most of the Bay samples during this period were at the minimum detectable
level of 2 MPN/100mL until 8/20/97. Beginning this date the slight increase
at 2 locations is attributable to rainfall (approximately 0.6 inches
overnight on 8/19-20).

Details:

All units are MPN/100mL (ie. most probable number of fecal coliform
bacteria per 100 milliliters of sample) expressed as a 5-day log mean. The
water quality objective is 200 MPN/100 mL (5-day log mean) for water
contact activities and 500 MPN/100mL (5-day log mean) for non-water contact
activities.

update for samples collected through: 7/15/97
        4 MPN in SBSA effluent
        2 MPN above SBSA outfall
2 MPN at 500 yards southeast of outfall
2 MPN at 500 yards northwest of outfall
2 MPN at 1000 yards northeast of outfall
