Subject: Larkspur Rescue

Yesterday, John w\Windsports and I rescued a sailor who lost his boat off of
Paradise Cay Harbor. Two things I learned about the experience. 1. If you
sink your Boat or break down while Windsurfing stay with your equipment.
Reason: That is where the Coast Guard will search. You would think that
they would move out and increase the search area, but they just hovered over
the boat. Meanwhile this kid was swimming back to the Harbor. Not a very
good idea with a 30 knot head wind and against a flooding tide. 2nd thing I
learned, send someone into shore to alert the Coastguard to the description
or position of the downed sailor, while another person stays with the person
in the water. If you are alone do not leave the person and go for
help,(they may not be found), Instead stay with the person and try to sail
to the nearest downwind location with the person holding on to your back
footstrap. The one thing that might have alerted the Coastguard Helicopter
sooner would have been a flare, my old harness had a pack built in, but the
one I have now does not. Anyway it is something to think about. bw
