I wouldn't try WD-40 as the organic component(s) will most likely leach into
the matrix, weakening the mast in that area. I highly doubt that it will
actually attack the matrix chemically, but you'd have to evacuate (good luck)
the mast to assure that the residual volitiles don't accelerate environmental
stress cracking.

The double boom method with 2 other people twisting on each end works best,
from what I've found. I like the duct tape idea though.

about wrapping duct tape around the upper half so you can get the
boom to grab tightly? Also, try spraying some WD-40 into the joint.
No guarantees, but it probably won't harm the carbon fiber,
especially if its rinsed off right away.
