SBSA Coliform Study update through 6/3//97

Summary & Interpretation
During the last 1-1/2 months the sample stations on the Bay have remained
very low, with bacterial concentrations at or below the detection level of
the SBSA test method, 2 per 100 mL. This is the same background level
observed last August when the study began.

Beginning in early May, the SBSA treatment plant began reducing the chlorine
dosage in order to gradually increase the fecal coliform bacterial levels in
the plant effluent discharged to the Bay. During late May and early June the
bacterial concentrations ranged from 14 to 98 MPN/100mL, with no apparent
effect on the Bay sampling stations.

Details
All units are MPN/100mL (ie. most probable number of fecal coliform bacteria
per 100 milliliters of sample) expressed as a 5-day log mean. The water
quality objective is 200 MPN/100 mL (5-day log mean) for water contact
activities and 500 MPN/100mL (5-day log mean) for non-water contact
activities.
