A leash on a surf board is definitely a must because there is no drag to
prevent the board form taking off (plus you have waves to deal with). A
windsurf on the other and might take off for a few feets but the sail will
fall in the water and cause enough drag to let you catch it. Also a leach
would probably get mangled in the footstraps, wich would not be fun. Come to
think of it, a leach would be nice sometimes when sailing in the waves. I have
seen many people at the coast loosing their gear crashing in the waves, only
to find it back to shore....
