Expensive and relatively safe answer...
Go to Maui and take lessons.
Hardest or strangest part for me was leaning to bear off before trying
to catch a wave since you slow down going up and over and bearing off
builds speed. I still haven't tried the waves in the cold water....the
Bay is closer for me.

Also, to eliminate (or reduce fear) I sailed out, dumped my rig and let
a wave hit me while holding on the proper way so I knew what to expect
before it happened by surprise. Thus I'd had a wave wash over me and my
rig before I even tried riding one. Worked pretty well.
