A little sand in the mast sleeve won't hurt anything. It washes out the
next time you fall in. Little holes in the mast sleeve normally don't need to
be patched, they usually don't grow.
I once got a lot of sand in the mast sleeve and batten pockets. To clean it
I removed all the battens, hung the sail by the head and the downhaul
grommet, one end lower than the other, then hosed the sand out of the
mast sleeve and batten pockets.
