The 1995 Seatrend Surf Challenge held on May 4 - 6 was a great
success
thanks to the folks who organized it, the sponsors, and the 46
contestants who came from places like Maui, the Gorge, Southern,
Central,
and Northern CA, and the DR. The organizers were Randy French of
Seatrend Santa Cruz, Ed Angulo, Rainbow Fin Co., and Ski Shop Santa
Cruz.
Sponsors included Seatrend, North Sails, Angulo Hawaii, Rainbow Fin
Co., Ski Shop Santa Cruz, DaKine, Bucci, Wind Tracks Magazine,
Dynafiber,
and UltraNectar. The event was such a success, that the current plan is
to have another one next year.
The wind and waves cooperated, so we got to see some hot moves by
some
hot guys and gals, much of which was captured on video by Jim
Lundeen
(Force 10) and by photographers such as Glenn Dubock and Erin
Calmes.
The final day had the best waves and wind, and the hottest heats, with
Kai Katchedourian and Josh Angulo dukin it out, an exciting heat
between
brothers Paul and Peter Sheibel, and the expression sessions highlighted
by big moves, and by Ian Boyd sailing naked. The event culminated in a
killer bash thrown at the Whale City Baker Bar & Grill in Davenport. The
contestants and anyone who bought a ticket were treated to dinner, live
music by the Substitutes, dancing, and videos of the event.
