Damn! What a nightmare scenario: loosing your board in 3.9 wind in the Channel.
I'm thoroughly impressed that you kept your head together and got yourself out
of there.
Last night I was talking to two windsurfing co-workers about Lesson #4 on your
list:
4. tether the mast to the board.
I was telling them that one of my main fears is losing the board, and that I
hadn't figured out a good way to tether the rig to the board. What I have been
doing is tying the bottom of the uphaul to the tether lead on my mast base star
foot. So, if the rig separates at the mast base, the boom will be connected to
the star foot via the uphaul. The problem with this is that if the rig twists
around several times in the same direction of rotation, the tether connection
wraps around the mast base and eventually binds up. One time, this bound up
tether caused my star foot to start loosening up. Another problem is if the
star foot itself becomes detached from the board (unscrews, mast track pulls
out,etc.) this method won't work.
So, how do you guys and gals out there in windsurfing cyberspace tether your
rig to the board?
