Subject: Re: Sailing accounts for yesterday wanted....

I arrived at Third Av. around 4:30. It did not look as windy as the report
suggested. I was on a 7'10"/5.3. My mast broke on the first run/first jump
around the channel marker. It just snapped 1.5 foot from the base. It slighly
tore my 1 day old Neil Pryde Wave NR. The mast was 3 years old. I guess it's
time had come. I was able to pack all the gear on my small board (carrying a
few extra lines circled around my boom helped). One guy tried to tow me but
had a hard time getting started (thanks!). We both had small boards. I told
him I would try to swim back and asked him to check up on me once in a
while. At least two other people saw me and one did not even stop. Since
the tide was coming out and the wind was blowing 35 knots, I was not really
drifting much but I was not getting any closer from the shore either. I swam
for 1.5 hours and walked for 1/2 hour. My board is too small to get on it an
paddle. Nobody saw me. And I never saw the two people who knew I was there
either. I had drifted too far downwind. I made it to the old lauch by 7:30.
Another tow would have been nice.
Didn't get to enjoy this nuclear day much! Will take any advice as to which
mast to get. I guess Dynafiber is it. How about a skinny? (I need to buy it
today since it's gonna blow again).
Wednesday was great-- unlike previous comments suggested. I sailed for 3
hours in the channel fully powered or overpowered on my 5.3. The wind died
at the channel marker on the way back though...
